Hacker is in many computer subcultures it simply means "clever programmer", with no connotation of computer security skill. Cracker will investigate the possibility of breaking or "cracking" copy protection on software programs, breaking into systems and causing harm, changing data, or stealing.
The attackers' instinct is to go for the weakest point of defense, and to exploit it. The saying "A chain is no stronger than its weakest link" is a very suitable for describing attacks on cryptosystems. Sometimes the weakness may have appeared insignificant to the designer of the system, or maybe the cryptanalyst will discover something that was not seen by anyone before.
The "hacker" will subvert computer security without authorization of using technology (usually a computer or the Internet) for terrorism, vandalism, credit card fraud, identity theft, intellectual property theft, and many other forms of crime. This can mean taking control of a remote computer through a network, or software cracking. The term, white hat hacker is often used to describe those who attempt to break into systems or networks in order to help the owners of the system by making them aware of security flaws. On the flipside, the black hat hacker is a person that maintains his or her vulnerabilities and exploits them confidentially.
